NO STEP INCREASES, FREEZE WAGES IN NEW CONTRACTS

To all Ulster County School Districts and Towns and Cities:

Please do the following.

1) NO STEP INCREASES (There is NO mandate for these.)

2) FREEZE WAGES IN NEW CONTRACTS. (There is NO mandate for percent increases.)

It depends on the type of step increase you are talking about. With teachers you are right, their steps are just longevity payments essentially. In other types of job titles particularly in the state step increases represent the state paying less to an employee for their first couple of years to get them up to the budgeted salary that the position is supposed to be. In those cases you will find that the unions agree with you and want step increases eliminated so that it doesn't take 3 or 5 years to get to that salary that their members are supposed to be making in the first place.

School Districts announce the annual contract raise but never mention these 'step" increases. In our district teachers can get more than 1 step per year. This past year a teacher pay increased 27%.
